11:22pm on a Wednesday night…
It’s the dead of night and the landlord to the Literacy Link South Central office is frantically racing to the premises. He pulls up to the building to find policemen surrounding the LLSC office and he already fears the worst. Looking back, it’s funny how a simple decision set in motion these turn of events.
A few hours earlier…
It’s almost quitting time on a summer Wednesday afternoon; for the past few weeks I’ve been running around organizing photo shoots for my ‘Have You Seen Rita?‘ contest and I could really use some downtime. 5 o’clock chimes and I decide to pack it all up for the day. A little R&R and I should be good to go for the rest of the week, so I didn’t even bother propping myself up in my usual spot in the office, I simply jumped into my travel bag and called it a night.
The next morning…
We’re barely into the day when our office landlord walks in with a disapproving look on his face. “I need you to move that mannequin” were the first words he uttered as he walked through the door. The rest of the staff at LLSC seemed a little confused from the request and were looking for some sort of clarification; “To your office?”, “Why?” and so forth. “I need you to move it right now” he reiterated and with that, the landlord began to tell a story about what had happened last night.
It was 11pm on a quiet night when he received a frantic call from his maintenance supervisor. “I don’t know how to say this but I was in Literacy Link South Central checking the systems and I found a corpse in a bag by the entrance! Don’t worry I’ve already called the police and they’re on their way.” Needless to say, our landlord jumped out of bed and practically flew to our office fearing the worst. Little did he know that when he pulled in, the police were already having a chuckle about what turned out to be me, a mannequin in a travel bag. With everything sorted out, everyone returned to their homes and chalked it up as a misunderstanding.
I’m sure the landlord didn’t find the whole ordeal that funny, but I couldn’t help but have a chuckle myself as I dozed back off in my travel bag. I guess such is the life of a mannequin, we tend to be perceived at a moment’s glance but all it takes is a second look to get to know us. Not to mention that now I finally have an excuse to request a larger travel bag, wink wink.
